A tale of telehealth

A tale of telehealth

How fictional Allina Health | Aetna member Jane uses virtual care to manage her health from home

When life gets busy, prioritizing your health can sometimes take a backseat. That’s why (fictional) Allina Health | Aetna member Jane started using telehealth, or virtual care.

Telehealth saves time and helps you skip travel, traffic or time away from work or family. It also gives you more choices.

Jane lives in a small town where some types of care are harder to find. But telehealth helps her stay healthy without long drives or delays. Jane can connect with her providers from home by video, phone or a secure message — whatever’s easiest. Whether she’s managing her diabetes or getting help for an itchy rash, Jane learned that telehealth makes care convenient.

See why she uses telehealth.

Take control of a chronic condition

Jane has type 2 diabetes. Telehealth helps her stay connected to her providers without the stress of constant in-person visits. Through regular virtual check-ins, they review her blood sugar, talk through her meals and make sure her medicines are working well for her.

Jane also uses a covered blood glucose monitor that sends her readings directly to her provider. If anything looks unusual, they can reach out quickly and offer support. These virtual visits help Jane stay on track. They also remind her that she’s not managing her condition alone.

Get care for a skin irritation

Last summer, Jane got a bad case of poison ivy. Instead of waiting days for an in-person appointment, she set up a telehealth visit. During a video call, she showed her rash to her provider who diagnosed it right away and sent a prescription to her local pharmacy.

The whole visit took less than 20 minutes, and Jane never had to leave her house. After starting the medicine, she began to feel better the next day. It was  fast care when she needed it most.

Talk with a mental health professional

Jane sometimes struggles to fall asleep and decided to connect with a counselor through telehealth. Talking about her stress and sleep challenges from home helps her feel calm, relaxed and more open.

Telehealth makes mental health care more accessible for people like Jane, who sometimes:

  • Feel anxious about going to a provider’s office
  • Have busy schedules
  • Don’t have a provider nearby or access to transportation

Virtual mental health care offers support in a way that feels safe, private and easier to fit into everyday life.

See a specialist from far away

A few months ago, Jane’s provider suggested she see a specialist. The challenge? The nearest one was far away. Thanks to telehealth, Jane was able to meet with the specialist online instead. Her primary care provider (PCP) shared her test results ahead of time, and they worked together to create a personalized care plan.

When to see a provider in person

While Jane uses telehealth often, it can’t replace all types of care. Some symptoms need a face-to-face visit. Knowing when to go in person and where to go helps you take charge of your health.

Seek immediate, emergency care for things like:

  • Chest pain or trouble breathing
  • Severe or ongoing headaches
  • Heavy bleeding that won’t stop

If something feels serious, new or frightening, call 911 or go to urgent care or the emergency room. When in doubt, it’s always better to be safe and get checked out in person.
